Dressing Baby for Cold Weather: A Layering Guide

Baby knit bear ear winter hat with ear flaps - BloomingFlower

Babies can't tell you when they're too hot or too cold. A simple layering plan helps keep them comfortable.

A simple rule of thumb

Many parents dress baby in one more layer than they're wearing themselves. Check the back of baby's neck: it should feel warm, not sweaty or cold.

How to layer

  • Base layer: a soft cotton bodysuit or romper
  • Middle layer: a knit top or sweater
  • Outer layer: a warm coat or bunting outdoors
  • A hat, socks and mittens for cold days

Car seat safety

Take off bulky coats before buckling baby into a car seat. Buckle baby in with thin layers, then put a blanket or coat over the straps.
